Fascinating archive footage of a historic narrow gauge railway's early days of preservation have emerged.

The Ffestiniog Railway was first opened in the 1830s to carry slate from the quarries of Blaenau Ffestiniog to the wharves of Porthmadog for export to all four corners of the world.

The 13-mile railway was an innovator being amongst the first to introduce steam locomotives which were especially built to haul heavy trains on the line's tight corners.

But when the slate industry declined the line fell into disuse officially closing in 1946

Union Pacific steam locomotive No. 4014, the Big Boy, is in one piece again nearly two years after the behemoth was disassembled to begin its restoration.

The Union Pacific Steam Team recently hoisted the Big Boy’s more than 250-ton boiler and rear engine into the air with two massive cranes and reconnected it to its front engine. Getting to that connection moment was a complicated endeavor.

The PL 691 heritage steam engine which was installed in the headquarters complex in the 1990s was refurbished and manufactured by Kerr Stuart and Company of England in 1903.

Gwili Railway is a victim of the harsh west Wales weather, with winter rain lashing carriages and rolling stock.

Without cover, the valuable and historical vehicles are prey to the elements, and wooden carriages are easily damaged.
