The Selby rail crash (also known as the Great Heck rail crash) was a high-speed train accident that occurred at Great Heck near Selby, North Yorkshire, England on the morning of 28 February 2001. 10 people were killed and 82 people suffered serious injuries.

The electrification of the Trans-Siberian Railway, a project begun in 1929, is completed.

A “new build” Peppercorn Class A1 Pacific 60163 Tornado was unveiled to the world's press at Darlington works by A1 Steam Locomotive Trust. The first new steam locomotive to be built in the UK since 1960.

Official opening of Docklands Light Railway London City Airport branch extension under the River Thames to Woolwich Arsenal.

The replacement South Western franchise, awarded to a joint venture of FirstGroup and MTR Europe, was formally launched at London Waterloo on September 4. The franchise had begun on August 20.

On Thursday 9 November 2017, Network Rail, alongside colleagues from Department for Transport, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, Salford Mayor Paul Dennett, Northern, 
Transpennine Express, Transport for the North and Transport for Greater Manchester, celebrated the completion of the Ordsall Chord.

Luas Cross City (Dublin) opens.
