Our country is the birthplace of the railways, pioneering infrastructure and locomotive developments that changed the world.
That heritage underpins the National Railway Museum’s unique collection.
Looking to the future, we have a bold and ambitious plan to invest £50 million to completely transform the museum. This investment will bring the epic story of railways past, present and future alive and open up our world-class collection for even more people to enjoy—and this is your chance to offer your support and feedback on the proposals.
While we are the custodians of the past, we need to be fit for the future.
Our 2025 vision is to:
• Reach more than 1 million visitors a year
• Invest £5 million in an interactive ‘Wonderlab’ to bring the principles of science and engineering to life
• Create a spectacular new gallery to showcase the collection
But we need your help. This vision will see the museum at the cultural heart of the proposed York Central scheme, an £800m project of huge ambition which will transform a forgotten area of the city into vibrant neighbourhoods, cultural spaces and a high-quality commercial quarter.
Together York Central and the revitalised National Railway Museum will provide a huge economic boost to the city of York creating jobs, opportunities and facilities for local people as well as supporting the businesses, goods and services we all rely on.
The application for this scheme is currently going through York City Council’s planning process and you can have your say on the proposed development.
